How strong is your Reason Why?

In all honesty, if you had to ask yourself the question; "How strong is my reason for wanting to do something?" How strong would it really be?

Because for most people, they know instantly, they might not say it out loud but actually assessing your desire, your real strength of reason is a really important part of making a difference.

Reason Why is all about desire, it's about motivation.

"Towards" or "Away From" Motivation

Around this time of year membership of health clubs and gyms declines after booming in January.

Why? Well at Christmas time a lot of people are motivated through their new year's resolutions to lose weight so sign-up for health club and gym membership, BUT actually their motivation isn't towards achieving something, it's away from something.

So a little tip, if you ever want to define a goal about weight loss, is to always define the goal of what you want to be in the future rather than what you want to lose.

A towards motivation is to actually know what you want, maybe visualise it very clearly to get clarity about it - it makes it more desirable. Away from motivation is when you know what you don't want.

2011 - which direction are you moving in?

Are you being pulled by a dream or pushed by circumstances at the moment? In other words, when assessing your reason why, do you notice that you are tending to move towards gaining pleasure or moving away from a specific source of pain?

It doesn't matter which, but it is important to to know the difference. If you are seeking to move away from the source of pain, your motive for continuing to take further action is likely to diminish at some future point.

An example relating to making a difference about personal finances is that a person's strong reason why might be to avoid paying interest on a credit card or to get rid of an overdraft. Both these reasons are focused on moving away from something they don't want. As the credit card bill and the overdraft reduce, the pain becomes less and might even become bearable.

The danger is that their focus remains on the past and the person says "It's much better than it used to be", rather than refocusing and moving towards something they do want.

What you've got to remember about your motivation is, if you've got lots of things happening in your life, these things are going to be competing with each other for attention and energy, maybe time and resources.
