How to Charm Anyone By Brian Tracy

Psychologists tell us that the core of personality is self-esteem. This has best been defined as "how much you like yourself." Your self-esteem is the sum total of how important and valuable you feel you are at any moment.

The Secret of Charm
The deepest craving of human nature is the need to feel valued and valuable. The secret of charm is therefore simple: make others feel important.

Five Ways to be Charming
  1. Acceptance. The greatest gift you can give other people is the attitude of "unconditional positive regard." That is you accept them in their entirety, without limitation. You never criticize or find fault. You are totally accepting of everything about them. This is the starting point of being charming.
  2. Appreciation. Whenever you express appreciation to others for something they have done, small or large, their self-esteem increases. They feel more competent and capable. Their self-image improves and their self-respect soars. And how do you trigger this wonderful feeling in others? It is simple. You say "thank you" on every occasion, for any large or small reason.
  3. Approval. It is said that "babies cry for it, men die for it." Throughout life, all humans have a deep subconscious need for approval of their actions and accomplishments. No amount of approval ever satisfies for long. The need is ongoing, like the need for food and rest. People who continually seek opportunities to express approval are welcome wherever they go. Perhaps the best definition of approval is "praise." Just remember, whenever you praise other people for something they have done, their self-esteem is elevated.
  4. Admiration. As Abraham Lincoln said, "Everybody likes a compliment." When you give people a genuine, sincere compliment about a trait, possession, or accomplishment, they automatically feel better about themselves. They feel acknowledged and recognized. They feel valuable and important. They like themselves more, and they like you more. Compliment a person on an article of clothing. Compliment someone on a trait, like punctuality or persistence. Compliment for small things as well as large.
  5. Attention. This is perhaps the most important quality of all. It is the most powerful behavior for building self-esteem and is the key to instant charm. The more closely you pay attention to other people, the more valuable and important they will feel they are, and the more they will like you.
Action Exercise
The next time you meet your significant other or even someone you work with, conduct this exercise: Imagine that when you were young, you had a dear friend with whom you shared many important emotional experiences of your young life. But years passed and you lost touch. You had no idea where your friend had gone. One day, when you are walking down the street suddenly there he is! Your whole face lights up and all you can think is, "It's you!"

Now, the next time you meet a person or persons who are important to you, especially loved ones or dear friends, create this same feeling and act as if you are rediscovering them after a too-long absence. Treat these special people as if seeing them makes you feel incredibly happy. No matter who they are, they will think that you are an incredibly charming person.

Three Principles for Great Success By: Brian Tracy

Get Better Results than Ever BeforeThere are several principles of military strategy that you can apply to your business, every single day. These can help you to think better and get better results than ever before.
Do the UnexpectedOne really helpful military principle that can be applied to business is the Principle of Surprise. The principle of surprise says, "do the unexpected!" In sales and marketing, this means to be continually seeking ways to out-flank or upset your competition.
Do the Opposite of BeforeSometimes doing exactly the opposite of what you have been doing up till now can turn out to be the perfect solution. The natural tendency for a person, when they find themselves in a hole, is to dig deeper. In many cases, the solution is to go and dig somewhere else. Remember, the first law of holes is, "When you find yourself in one, stop digging."
Follow-up and Follow-ThroughA second military principle that applies to business is the Principle of Exploitation. The principle of exploitation emphasizes the importance of follow-up and follow-through. In business, this means that, when you get an opportunity, you exploit it to the fullest extent possible. If you have a great promotional idea or product or service, you sell all you can. You take advantage of your idea or breakthrough and use every opportunity to capitalize on it.

Work Harmoniously With OthersThe third principle of military strategy that applies to personal and corporate thinking is the Principle of Cooperation. In business, this is often called the principle of synergy. In military terms, this is often called the principle of "concerted action." In business terms, your ability to work effectively and harmoniously with other individuals and groups is more responsible for your success than any other quality.
Win the Cooperation of Key PeopleA key part of strategic thinking is for you to identify the individuals, groups and organizations whose cooperation you will require to achieve your goals. Make a list of them and then organize the list in order of importance. Then ask yourself, "How am I going to win their cooperation?"
Answer Everyone's Favorite QuestionEverybody wants to know, "what's in it for me?" The effective executive is always looking for ways to help or assist others knowing that this is the only sure way to create within them a desire to help you to achieve your goals.

By doing the unexpected, by following up and following through, and by constantly looking for ways to get other people to cooperate with you, you will accomplish more in a shorter time than you might ever have imagined.
Action ExercisesHere are two things you can do immediately to apply these ideas in your business and in your work:

First, look at your job, especially the areas where you are experiencing frustration, and question whether or not there is a completely different way of approaching your problem or situation. Do the unexpected. Perhaps you should be doing exactly the opposite of what you are doing today. All success in business comes from surprising the competition in some way.

Second, identify the people, groups and organizations whose assistance you will need to achieve your goal. Continually look for ways to earn their support and cooperation by thinking in terms of what is in it for them.

7 Disciplines for High Performance - By Brian Tracy

There are seven disciplines you must develop if you want to achieve all that is possible for you. You can learn these disciplines through practice and repetition until they become automatic.

Goal Setting
Every morning, take three to five minutes to write out your top goals in the present tense. Get a spiral notebook for this purpose. By writing out your ten goals at the beginning of each day, you will program them deep into your subconscious mind.

This daily goal writing will activate your mental powers. It will stimulate your mind and make you more alert. Throughout the day, you will see opportunities and possibilities to move more rapidly toward your goals.

Planning and Organizing
Take a few minutes, preferably the night before, to plan out every activity of the coming day. Always work from a list. Always think on paper. This is one of the most powerful and important disciplines of all for high performance.

Priority Setting
The essence of all time management, personal management, and life management is contained in your ability to set the proper priorities on the use of your time. This is essential for high performance.

Concentration on your Highest-Value Activities
Your ability to work single-mindedly on your most important task will contribute as much to your success as any other discipline you can develop.

Exercise and Proper Nutrition
Your health is more important than anything else. By disciplining yourself to exercise regularly and to eat carefully, you will promote the highest possible levels of health and fitness throughout your life.

Learning and Growth
Your mind is like a muscle. If you don't use it, you lose it. Continuous learning is the minimum requirement for success in any field.

Time for Important People in your Life
Relationships are everything. Be sure that in climbing the ladder of success, you do not find it leaning against the wrong building. Build time for your relationships into every day, no matter how busy you get.

Action Exercise
These seven disciplines will ensure that you perform at the highest level and get the greatest satisfaction and results from everything you do. Study these seven disciplines and then make a plan for how you can incorporate each of them into your daily life.

Stacking vs. Multitasking

Now if you do two things at once but can keep the majority of your attention on only ONE of those things, that's a whole different animal. I call this stacking. Dave Crenshaw calls it background tasking. (You can call it whatever you wish.)

Stacking helps you get more done, faster and better. It is a productive use of your time because only ONE of the tasks you are doing requires mental effort.

Here are a few examples of what I'm talking about:

  • Eating dinner while watching a video
  • Jogging while listening to your iPod
  • Driving while listening to the radio
  • Writing an e-mail while printing out a document
  • Munching on a snack while riding a bicycle
  • Listening to the news while showering
  • Reading a book while getting a haircut

Stacking doesn't necessarily guarantee that you'll become more effective (by doing the right things), but it can practically guarantee more efficiency (doing things right to get maximum results in minimum time).

MANAGE YOUR TERRITORY WELL

Just as a retail shopkeeper has a store from which he or she sells, you have a store as well. It is your sales territory. It is the area in which you work to develop sales and customers. And just as a physical store must be well organized for maximum sales results, so must your territory.

One of the major reasons for failure in selling is poor territory management. The average salesperson travels randomly throughout his or her territory, driving from place to place depending on whoever calls or is willing to see him or her leave at the moment.

This salesperson will often drive all the way up to the north end of the city to make one call and then all the way down to the south end to the city, spending an hour or more in traffic, to make the second. Then he or she drives all the way back to the north end again for the next call.

You know that your income is largely determined by the amount of time that you spend personally with people who can buy. You must therefore plan every day strategically to increase these precious moments, and let nothing distract or divert you.

Here is a simple method of territory management that you can apply immediately. Divide your sales territory into four parts, like cutting up a pie. From now on, resolve to work in one of these quadrants each day or each half day. When you make appointments, cluster your appointments so that they are close together. This will shorten the amount of time you spend on the road and increase the number of minutes on each day when you are actually prospecting, presenting, and following up.

If someone asks you if you can meet on a particular day and you are not scheduled to be in that area on that day, resist the temptation to change your plans and rush over. Instead, explain politely that you will be in the prospect’s area on a particular morning or afternoon, and ask to arrange an appointment at that time. It is amazing how much more respect prospect have for a salesperson when they know that he or she is busy and well organized.
Many salesperson, by reorganized their territories, have increased their income by 20 percent, 30 percent and even 50 percent in a single month. They find themselves spending much less time travelling and much more time face to face with customers. Both their income and their self confidence go up.

Remember, your time is all you have to sell. And nobody will pay you for the time you spend driving around between appointments. It is not the number of hours that you put in each day that counts but the amount of direct selling work you put into those hours.

To increase your income, you must increase the number of minutes that you spend face to face with customers by reducing your traveling time. Put the law of averages to work in your behalf. The more people you see, all other things being equal, the more you will sell.

Three Characteristics of Top Sales Producers

Being a successful producer in any aspect of life is more than having high production. Production or money or wealth is only one measuring stick. There are many other measures in life: family life; relationships; spouse; children; physical health; spiritual well being; mental state. One who is fulfilled in these ways and is also a financial success has great abundance. I know a lot of people who trade it all for money. Is that really the measure of success? I am far more impressed with people who craft a fabulous lifestyle and are also financially successful. These people share three common traits.

First, they are the explorers. They explore everything and question everybody who could help them to reach the next level. The next level is not always a financial level. It could be a better relationship with a spouse, a higher level of physical fitness, or deeper spiritual convictions. The truth is, there are many things more attractive at the next level than money. These things also carry more meaning than money. The ultimate accomplishment is to be an explorer who explores for the joy that growth and creation brings, not just for the cash.

Jim Rohn had a wonderful saying: “It’s not the money that makes the millionaire, it’s what that person had to become.” That millionaire could lose the money tomorrow. The money carries little importance in the long run. What matters is how a person had to change to become the person who had the value of a millionaire.

The opposite of an explorer is a cynic. The cynic looks for reasons why it will not work, for ways to maintain the status quo and continue to do nothing. The explorer is seeking new information and ideas that will lead to the next level.

Second, the successful producers are investors. Successful producers invest in their most important asset: themselves. Just as finding the best real estate deal has no value if you don’t buy it, realizing your true value requires that you invest in yourself. You need to work continually to find the best path to achievement, and then put in what it takes in order to start down that path. Investors buy the best deal, the best book, and the best tape series. They are the people who are constantly reading, who are listening to audiotapes in their cars. They look for others who have been where they want to go, or who are going in their direction but are farther down the path. They stop and ask for directions when they get lost in life.

The opposite of an investor is an excuse maker. Excuse makers are always looking back and covering their tracks. Their vocabularies are littered with “if only” and “but.” Being successful is far more rewarding than achieving mediocrity while having a good excuse. We all have the choice to have what we want in life, being all that God created us to be, or to spend our lives coming up with excuses for having fallen short. The choice is up to you.

Third, the most successful people are implementers. Exploring and investing do not produce success without implementation. Implementation draws the bold line between massive success and failure. We all have found great ideas and done nothing with them. We have all implemented a few small changes and seen staggering results. Resolve today to implement one idea that you have been thinking about, researching and evaluating. Do it now. The implementer is the only one who achieves massive success. How many ideas or thoughts have you had in your real estate sales career that would have been windfalls if you had just disciplined yourself to implement them?

You may need to commit right now to a new path, or you may need only to commit to following your current path farther toward implementation. In either case, begin by making the commitment now to explore, invest and implement. If you do these things daily, your life will never be the same.

MAKE EVERY MINUTE COUNT

Your most valuable asset, in terms of cash flow, is your earning ability. It is your ability to go out each day and apply your skills in your profession to earn an excellent income. The most successful salespeople, in every field, work on maximizing their earning ability every single day.

It has taken you an entire lifetime of education and experience to develop your earning ability to where it is today. You should never take it for granted.

By leveraging your earning ability, you can enjoy one of the highest standards of living in the world by focusing your time and talents on selling more and more of your products or services in your marketplace.

Your most precious resource is your time – the minutes and hours of each day. It is all you really have to sell. In fact, your entire lifestyle today – your home, your car, your bank account, and so on – is the result of how you have traded your time up to now. If, for any reason, you are not completely happy with the results of the way you have traded your time in the past, you can begin right now to trade it better for the future.

One of the very best uses of your time is to increase your earning ability. One of the greatest timesavers of all is to get better at the most important things you do. Nothing else will give you a more rapid and predictable increase in your income and your standard of living. The more you invest your time and money back into yourself, into making yourself more capable and confident at the activities that pay you the most, the more you will earn and the happier you will be.

Resolve today to become an expert at time management. This one skill will make more things possible for you than perhaps any other, for without it, no other skills can be utilized to their fullest extent.

The core principle of time management is the ability to do first things first; to set priorities among competing demands on your time; and above all, to think, plan, decide, and then to take the appropriate action.

The most important word in setting priorities is “consequences.” An activity is valuable in direct proportion to the potential consequences of doing it or not. The task that represents the most serious potential consequences is almost always the one with the highest priority.

There are four questions that you can ask and answer continually to keep yourself focused on your highest priorities. First, ask yourself, “What are my highest value activities in terms of the potential consequences of doing them or not doing them?”

For you, a sales professional, they are (1) prospecting, (2) establishing rapport, (3) identifying needs, (4) making presentations, (5) answering objections, (6) closing the sale, and (7) getting referrals from customers. Your competence in each of these areas, and in all of them together, determines your sales and your income. What is the most important activity you need to be engaging in right now?

Second, ask yourself, “Why am I on the payroll?”

Every minute of every day, you should imagine that your boss were travelling along with you, observing your actions, and preparing your annual performance appraisal. Keep asking yourself, “Is what I’m doing right now leading to a sale?” This result is the sole reason you are on the payroll. If what you are doing is not leading to a sale, stop doing it and start doing something that is.

The third question you can ask and answer repeatedly is, “What can I, and only I, do that, if done well, will make a significant contribution to my company and myself?”

This is a task, such as prospecting or closing sales, that only you can do. If you don’t do it, it will not be done by someone else. The successful completion of this task, whatever it is, should be a major priority for you.

The fourth question for setting priorities, the best single question of all, is this: “What is the most valuable use of my time right now?”

There is only one answer to this question at any time. Your primary job is to identify the answer and then to work on this one task exclusively until it is complete.

Ask each of these questions of yourself continually. Hold you own feet to the fire. Discipline yourself to stay focused on those activities that can contribute the most to your success.

All highly effective people think clearly in two dimensions of time: long-term and short-term. First, they are very clear about their future goals and ambitions. Second, they are very focused in the moment in that they are always doing the one thing that can most contribute to achieving their most important goals. Your ability to hold these two thoughts simultaneously is the key to high productivity.
